Recently a video on Douyin went viral that featured a momfluencer explaining how by using the multi-intelligence (MI) chart, you can pinpoint exactly what extracurricular activities are best suited for your child based on their abilities and interest. She goes on to explain how this is a better approach than letting them experience everything because there’s a chance that if they dislike the teacher during a trial class, it can influence their entire outlook on the activity.

Sounds interesting doesn’t it? Has she discovered a shortcut to parenting and putting your kid ahead of the game?

To learn more about multi-intelligence, we reached out to two schools in Beijing that use it in their curriculum.

Ryan Cardwell from Ivy Academy holds a Master of Education degree with a focus on early childhood from the University of British Columbia and has been working in education for over 20 years. Nigel Mainville has been with Muffy’s International Kindergarten for almost 9 years and has worked as a paraprofessional in Special Education at an American public school prior to returning to Beijing to teach.

We’ve already heard from Muffy’s International Kindergarten yesterday on their thoughts. Here’s what Ivy Academy has to say.

Ivy Academy (IA) offers an English language environment taught by a team of highly qualified early childhood educators. There are three IA campuses, conveniently located at Sanlitun (Sanlitun Campus), Sanyuanqiao (Sanyuanquiao Campus) and CBD (Central Park Campus). As a member of Ivy Education Group, Ivy Academy’s mission is to educate and provide an environment which enables each child to attain these goals: to become self-confident, to know how to get along well with others, to be self-directed problem solvers, to make good choices, and to see themselves as children with good ideas.

Let’s have a recap on what MI is.

The Theory of Multiple Intelligences is a theory of psychology posited by Dr. Howard Gardner of Harvard University in the early 1980’s. It is not an approach to education, but rather a theory of intelligence that argues that there is not one general intelligence, but rather 8 distinct types of intelligence that all persons possess. Schools and kindergartens that take this notion seriously will offer a program that allows students to explore and develop all of the ways that they can be intelligent through a wide variety of hands on actives. There will also be ample choice of activities rather than one set of activities that all students must complete.

Based on your experience as an educator, is there one type of curriculum that’s better than others?

Ryan Cardwell (RC):

No, not really. School quality comes down to a number of factors such as the quality of staff, facilities, parent services, etc. There are great kindergartens of all kinds throughout the world. Parents should visit the kindergartens that are near their home and choose the one that they feel suits the needs of their family best.

What type of kids would you say suit the multi intelligence education style?

RC: As MI schools are most interested in discovering how each child is unique and providing choices for children, an MI inspired curriculum is suitable for most children.

5. What’s a typical day at your school like for a kindergartener?

At Ivy Academy, children are at school from 8:30am until 4pm. During that time children will engage in a variety of teacher directed activities such as art and movement classes as well as self-directed play times. There is also lunch and two snacks provided each day.

Is it possible to determine a child’s strengths and weaknesses at this age based on the multi-intelligence chart?

RC:

Dr. Gardner does not advocate the use of testing to assess multiple intelligences. See below from Gardner’s website:

“Myth #1 – Now that the intelligences have been identified, researchers should develop tests to measure these intelligences.
Reality #1 – MI theory is a critique of the standard psychometric approach wherein researchers test a construct; as such, Myth #1 is inconsistent with one of the major tenets of the theory. On the other hand, assessments in rich, real life contexts can be quite helpful. In this respect, one should consult some of the example of Good Practices on this website, such as Project Spectrum and Explorama.”

In our kindergartens we use observations of children’s choices and the ways in which they solve problems to learn something about their multiple intelligences.

One mom blogger claims that putting your child in all types extra curricular classes for them to try them out to see if they’re interested is counterproductive. Instead, parents should base their child’s behavior on the multi intelligence chart and score them accordingly to figure out which interests are best suited for their child. Do you agree?

RC: I categorically disagree with this parent’s opinion. Firstly, children’s interests and desires are constantly shifting during early childhood, so even if it was the case that the test was accurate (which is unlikely) it would not be accurate for long. Secondly, this parent seems to misunderstand the purpose of childhood. A protracted childhood is a period of development unique to the human species. It takes 17-18 years for a human to arrive at physical maturity.

During this time, psychologist Alison Gopnik argues that children should be exploring their intelligence not exploiting it. From “The Carpenter and the Gardener”: “Our job (as parents) is not to shape our children’s minds; it’s to let those minds explore all the possibilities that the world has to offer.” (Gopnik, 2016 p. 77). Parents who try actively to shape their children, or who try to “hack” their children in the way that this mother suggests, do their children a disservice. Though she is right that children’s experiences will be influenced by a teacher, she is taking the wrong lesson. If a child finds something that they enjoy, whether it’s because they like the teacher or the subject matter we should encourage them. If they want to try many things, we should encourage that too. Let’s let children be children and enjoy their childhood.

Ivy Academy regularly organizes open days for parents and kids to get a hands-on feel of the campus and meet the teachers in person. For more information on Ivy Academy, message them via WeChat or visit the school’s website. The school has three campuses in Beijing in Sanlitun, Central Park, and Ocean Express and accepts kids ages 2-6 years old.

Sandwiched in a four square kilometer area between the Third and Fourth Ring Roads, the CBD is the financial center of the city. Modern high rises, luxury shopping, five-star hotels, and major companies make up much of the environment. The famous CCTV Tower, or “Big Pants,” is CBD’s most recognizable landmark. Located just south of CBD, Shuangjing was once a no man’s land of factories, but is now home to higher-end housing. With one of the highest concentrations of residential compounds in Chaoyang District, Shuangjing has a diverse population of white-collar locals and expat families who have settled in the area due to its proximity to schools and CBD workplaces.

Pros

+ Affluent
+ Easy to get to other parts of the city due to subway lines and buses
+ Plenty of shopping in the area
+ Attractions in areas nearby
+ Great F&B scene
+ An active expat community with frequent events such as the Shuangjing Block Party

Cons

– Heaviest traffic in the city
– Crowded
– Pollution gets heavy
– Additional school options for older children requires a commute
– One public park area shared with Shuangjing
– Not much authentic Beijing culture
– Most green space is within compounds rather than publicly shared

Residential Compounds

Residential compounds abound in CBD. The aptly named Central Park features a central location in a large compound filled with restaurants, shops, cafes, beauty services, and even a bakery. Central Park has its own indoor swimming pool, sauna, squash court, and gym. Gemdale International Garden and the nearby shopping center Gemdale Plaza, also have a real neighborhood feel, with on-site markets, restaurants, cafes, a post office, a gym, a swimming pool, and a children’s playground. Pingod, nicknamed “Apple Community,” is another large compound with a good selection of convenience stores, close public transport, and shops. Adjacent to Viva Mall, Fulicheng has a gym and health club, children’s play areas, and a clubhouse. Landgent International apartments surround a man-made lake and central garden and is located near Carrefour, cafes, florists, laundry services, post office, and banks.

Schools

There are plenty of schools in Beijing’s CBD and Shuangjing neighborhoods including Beijing City International School (BCIS) and Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS, Beijing) which offer grades from kindergarten to high school, while Etonkids International Bilingual Kindergartens, Ivy Academy, and the Canadian International School of Beijing’s Jianguomen campus offer learning for students just beginning their academic careers.

Shopping

CBD has a number of high-end shopping malls frequented by business travelers, expats, and locals, such as Shin Kong Place, China World Mall, Kerry Center, and the LEED-certified Parkview Green. For more mid-range options, The Place has Zara, H&M, and Uniqlo. In Shuangjing, Carrefour, Decathlon, Viva Mall, and the recently completed Hopson One Mall are within walking distance of the area’s many residential compounds.

Dining

Restaurants tend to be concentrated in malls or compounds. For example, Central Park has several options such as The Woods (Modern European), Thai Lime Cafe, and LMPlus (Italian), while The Place has Moka Bros and Herbal Cafe (Cantonese). China World Mall and its labyrinth of connected buildings in Guomao also have a plethora of fun restaurants, including Migas Mercado, Arcade By Hatchery, and Beersmith Gastropub. Shuangjing has recently gained expat favorites like Q Mex and Blue Frog, and is continuing to grow in its offerings by the month.

Where to Play

For outdoor activities, Ritan Park is a green oasis in the middle of the CBD’s concrete jungle. It’s a great place to let kids burn off their energy and learn about some Beijing history and culture. There are also some modern-day touches, like a climbing wall and a decent playground. The Place is home to a number of great kids play areas both inside and outside the facility, including kid’s work out space, My Gym. Parkview Green is more upscale, with filtered air for polluted days. A regular destination at Parkview Green for visiting mums and babies is Little Oasis, a popular indoor play area. Moms would be glad to know that breastfeeding and baby changing rooms are particularly plentiful and clean at this fancy shopping mall. For more kid friendly cultural events, Ready Reading Library is a bilingual kid’s library offering an extensive selection of books catered towards children under the age of nine. They also sell an array of kid’s toys, organize arts and crafts classes, and often put on fun live storytelling events.

Surrounded by embassies, Chaoyang Park is the largest, most Western-style park in the city and is very popular with middle-class Chinese families and the expat community. Lined with shops, restaurants, and residential compounds, this area is easy for daily living. Solana Lifestyle Shopping Park is pretty much modeled after the mixed indoor/outdoor malls of the west, while nearby Liangmaqiao is a busy commercial area with many expat conveniences and high-end hotels where you can enjoy some amazing fine dining options. This neighborhood is a great option if you require a space that isn’t flooded with cars and electric scooters to get a run in every once in a while.

Pros

+ Proximity to Chaoyang Park (which hosts free yoga sessions, Heyrobics, HeyRunning, pick-up soccer games, and more)
+ Many western supermarkets and restaurants
+ Several embassies and schools

Cons

– Some compounds are farther from subway access
– Living inside the expat bubble
– A higher cost of living when compared to some other inner city areas

Residential Compounds

Several residential compounds are available in Chaoyang. Palm Springs has north-facing units overlooking Chaoyang Park, a Roman-style garden, large clubhouse with an indoor swimming pool, children’s playground, sauna, and gym—it’s no wonder it’s popular with families. Park Avenue has a shopping complex with imported groceries, cafes, and sporting good stores in addition to its children’s playground, swimming pool, and gym. Greenlake Place is another option, and has many stores, restaurants, and even a Jenny Lou’s in the compound.

Schools

Canadian International School of Beijing (CISB), Beanstalk International Bilingual School (BIBS), House of Knowledge Schools and Kindergartens (HoK), and Ivy Academy are all top notch and convenient options if you are residing in this area of the city.

Shopping

Solana Lifestyle and Shopping Park (featured photo) is a large, popular open-air mall next to Chaoyang Park. It’s one of the most known shopping centers for families, and features International name brands like Zara, Uniqlo, Muji, H&M, American Eagle, Gap, and more. Also, if you are craving something that’s not all that different from the farmer’s markets back home, check out Farm2Neighbors at Beijing Grand Summit each weekend for a selection of some of the city’s best vendors of organic produce and specialty goods.

Dining

If you are looking for international restaurants in the neighborhood make sure to head to Beijing Grand Summit where you’ll find Baker and Spice, Obentos (Japanese, healthy), and much more, or head to Solana which houses Beijing favorites like Moka Bros, Tribe, and Tube Station Pizza. Just a short jaunt away from Solana to Maizidian and you’ll find some of the best Japanese food in Beijing at restaurants like Yume Wo Katare, serving up hearty bowls of ramen, or Vin Vie, where you’ll find inventive izakaya with a western touch.

Where to Play

As the largest patch of green space in Beijing, Chaoyang Park is the obvious choice. Entrance is inexpensive and there’s a lot of room to move around. Young visitors can fly kites, rent a pedal boat for the lake, go on fairground rides, or even participate in group yoga and exercise classes on the weekends if weather and AQI permit. When your kids are exhausted from the park, Solana Lifestyle Shopping Park is located a stone’s throw away. This family favorite has been open since 2008, with its fountains and whimsical decorations. Indoors, there’s an entire children’s wing with play facilities and family-oriented shops.

She has been attending Ivy Bilingual Kindergarten in Orchid Garden since then. Born in Panama, Violet claims three nationalities: Panamanian, Costa Rican, and American. Dad Cristian Mauricio Barquero Hernandez is from Costa Rica, and mom Marissa Jane Henkel is from the US. The family loves that Violet will be learning both English and Chinese in a multiple-intelligence based curriculum, explaining that they didn’t really choose the school based solely on that curriculum alone but found it very interesting for the development of their child. Ivy is also sharing with the family every single step of their child’s academic growth on a weekly basis with a report and accompanying pictures so they can witness her progress. Since her first day, Violet has been excited every morning to get up and go to school. She sings songs that she has learned in class, shows her parents her paintings, and tells them stories about friends. In her short time at Ivy, Violet has developed new friendships and is learning to speak some Chinese. Most importantly for the parents, they feel content that their daughter is growing in a school where she is confident, happy, and engaged.

Curriculum Spotlight: Multiple Intelligences

In his 1983 book, Frames of Mind, Dr. Howard Gardner first proposed the Multiple Intelligences theory framework. The Harvard University professor theory states that people, even children, learn and think differently, and there are numerous ways intelligences can manifest. The main intelligences Dr. Gardner identified are linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalist. In Beijing, the Ivy Education group incorporates these elements into the various curricula including a bilingual aspect. We spoke to the people at Ivy Academy to share with us how they use this curriculum as a foundation.

What’s unique about the curriculum?
The aim of the curriculum is to customize teaching methods that focus on educating the children according to their individual abilities and needs in a dynamic, play-based, and supportive environment. The teaching plans are more student-centric than the traditional academic subjects.

How is it applied?
With a Multiple Intelligences-style curriculum, educational institutions use wide-ranging approaches, exercises, and activities to try and reach all students. The theory is a building block since there isn’t a single preferred model and schools have adopted the eight intelligences to numbers or logic, pictures, words, natural, social interaction, music, and/or personal experience.

Here’s an overview:

Linguistic: The ability to use language to express what’s on our minds and to understand other people (e.g. word games, spelling, reading books, and looking at pictures)

Logical-mathematical: The ability to think logically and to use and manipulate numbers, quantities, and operations (e.g. science experiments, math, Lego, and construction)

Spatial: The ability to represent the spatial world in one’s mind (e.g. art and craft activities)

Musical: The ability to perceive and understand patterns of sound as well as creating and communicating meaning from sound (e.g. playing instruments, listening to music, composition, singing)

Bodily-kinesthetic: The ability to use fine and gross motor abilities (e.g. moving to music, playing dress-up, puppet shows)

Interpersonal: The ability to understand people and relationships (e.g. team games and activities)

Intrapersonal: The ability to understand oneself, one’s thoughts and feelings (e.g. working alone and independently)

Naturalist: The ability to understand and work with the natural world and the environment (e.g. gardening, looking at insects)

How well does this education system prepare students for the real world?
Children are taught to become self-confident, to get along well with others, to be problem solvers, to make good choices, and to see themselves as children with good ideas – all of which are valuable life skills.

Where is it offered?
This curriculum can be found in schools around the world. This can mainly be found in kindergarten and elementary schools as a foundational learning implementation
