Here at beijingkids, we are especially proud of this issue, Spilling Secrets, which takes an in-depth look at sex education and all of the many issues that surround this in China, from consent to periods to harassment.

We tackled these topics from the main perspective of wanting to help parents wade through how to protect children from sexual abuse and how to educate at a young age without stirring up too much interest, and this is why we chose “Protect Us, Teach Us” for our feature. Of course we couldn’t avoid topics that affect older kids and teens, like psychologically safe sex and cyberbullying; read our shocking interview with a student at a Beijing international school, describing his experience of being bullied online.

Living
Our jaws dropped when we saw Amber Meyer’s transformation at Catherine de France. We can’t wait to get our hands on chocolate by Deershop since it’s socially conscious and high quality cocoa. Since we were already thinking about sex and love, we couldn’t ignore that Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. We rounded up some luxury gifts, from cool shaving kits to oils, for spoiling your significant other.

Dining
Din Tai Fung gets a great review by the Kurbonov brothers who love superheroes as much as they love crabs. Professional chef Jonathan Howes brought his family into their swanky home at New World Beijing Hotel to show us how to prepare a meal that will make your partner swoon.

Health
We take a look at whether period talk is really taboo, and get a bit of information about balancing this cycle from Traditional Chinese Medicine’s point of view thanks to Dr. Melissa Rodriguez. In Mind Over Matter, Dr. Marc Murphy wrote a fabulous explanation of how to know when sex is probably mentally safe for everyone involved.

Learning
In Schooled, we asked Western Academy of Beijing and Fangcaodi International School to explain their approaches to sex education. We provide apps in Tech Corner that keep passwords safe to further protect against identity theft, and rounded up books to help with “the Talk” in Off the Shelf. CISB’s Adrian Elmo explains what would happen if a student wanted to visit a counselor to talk about sexual harassment. ISB students share with us their inspirations for their design projects, and students connected to Beijing’s LBGT center debate about whether gender is assigned or not.

Parenting
We’ve expanded our parenting section once again to include a new column called Marvelous Mom, which will alternate with Dynamic Dad. Jen Pohland is this month’s Marvelous Mom, as she explains the evolution in her own parenting and how the SLab helped her change her relationship with her daughter. Ember Swift shares the story she used to teach her children about special parts, and why and how to respect those parts. Jennifer Ambrose ponders the limits of sharenting as a child becomes a teen, and West Meets East shares perspectives on parent led sex education.

Whether you’re planning a move, settling in, or preparing to leave, it’s your essential, fact-packed resource.

Before you move
There’s an A-Z checklist of what to consider when choosing a school, and a tour round Beijing’s top family neighborhoods. Our guide to renting includes handy Mandarin phrases, and we look at what you need to know about medical insurance. In addition, we help ease the culture shock by warning you about some of the more striking cultural differences here!

Arriving
Our selection of essential apps will help you find your way around, and we also guide you through the complexities of Beijing’s healthcare system. We tackle one of the city’s most notorious problems in “Pollution Solutions”, and one you may not have considered: water safety. There’s practical tips on money, banking and paying your bills, and on hiring help. And though Beijing must be one of the safest of the world’s great cities, we offer some ideas on staying out of trouble on the streets.

Settling In
We learn from the experience of one family in coming to feel at home here, and look at how you can support your children through the transition. There’s a selection of the myriad of fun things for families to do in Beijing, and help with getting a ride to them. Finally, when you don’t feel like cooking, we introduce you to the range of delivery options for delicious dinners to your doorstep.

Leaving
For those who are heading on to new challenges, there’s an introduction to relocation and moving companies. Our timeline will help you plan for a stress-free move, and we suggest ideas for finding good homes for your unwanted possessions.

The November issue of beijingkids is about protecting and nurturing what’s most important: your family’s health.

Our features are packed plenty of ideas for places to do where the whole family can exercise together, which local brands of healthy, organic groceries to buy, a guide to traditional Chinese medicine, and a guide to dealing with diabetes in Beijing.

Just in time for cold season, our resident doctor Dr. Richard Saint Cyr explains cough syrup safety, and nutritionist Olivia Lee provides pointers on maintaining healthy habits through the cold weather.

Just because winter has settled in doesn’t mean you should stay in; layer up and head out to Wangfujing, where you can wander through book stores, tea shops, and more. We’ve also got a primer for equestrian-inclined families looking for a polo club in Beijing, and wild family adventures through Russia, Finland, and Tanzania.

Our learning section spotlights BJU orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ren Gang in When I Grow Up, and four Dulwich College Beijing students discuss the impact of culture and media on body image.

Learn to concoct a creamy coconut pumpkin soup in Food For Thought, and of course if you’d rather not chop and wash dishes, you can head to Southern Barbarian for delicious Yunnan cuisine.

And of course, search our event listings for fun family events, or check our directory listings for help finding anything in Beijing.

Giving birth in Beijing can be a scary thought at first, especially if you don’t know where to start – so we’ve rounded up a great selection of international and Chinese hospitals for moms-to-be. For new moms, Jennifer Bushman brings you a 9-month countdown with what to expect during your pregnancy, while nutritionist Olivia Lee provides updated advice on pregnancy nutrition. If you’re in need of a helping hand, pick up some tips from Charlotte Moreau on how to find a great ayi for both your home and your family. And if you’re thinking of expanding your family from three to four, read about how to speak with your first child about an incoming sibling. Also learn important pregnancy vocabulary with columnist Jennifer Ambrose.

With Halloween around the corner, find out where to pick up your frightening costumes in Beijing. Stay warm by hitting the kitchen with this month’s Food for Thought recipe, a delicious soup for autumn and read about where to have your pumpkin treats – from pumpkin soup to pumpkin pie. Fall also means a changing of leaves and there’s no better place to see them than on a hike around Fragrant Hills Park. For an ambitious itinerary, energetic families with older kids can also pair the hike with a trip to Beijing Botanical Gardens. Elsewhere, learn about how to stay active with the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts in Beijing.

As always, find kid-friendly events, search our Directories for anything and everything you’ll need in Beijing, and read about other families’ travel destinations.
