The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) determined last month that breast cancer is now the most widely diagnosed form of cancer worldwide, overtaking lung cancer as #1. It is not known if the Covid-19 pandemic contributed to these cases, as some people may have delayed regular doctor appointments and thus their diagnosis, but according to the World Health Organization (WHO)’s latest report, an estimated 1 in 5 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, and the most recent total was 1.8 million deaths from all cancers combined in both men and women, so patients should remain diligent in their health.

Now we all know how difficult it is for mothers to make time in their busy lives for their own health check-ups, but luckily the basic check for breast cancer can be done in your own home, and with no special equipment. The American Cancer Society of American warns that self-examination should not be used as the only screening tool, and merely as a way to continue prevention between physicals, or even ultrasounds and MRIs. Remember that no matter what you read on the internet (including here!), you should always consult your doctor in these matters.

Step 1: Begin by looking at your breasts in the mirror with your shoulders straight and your arms on your hips.

Here’s what you should look for:

Breasts that are their usual size, shape, and color

Breasts that are evenly shaped without visible distortion or swelling

If you see any of the following changes, bring them to your doctor’s attention:

Dimpling, puckering or bulging of the skin

A nipple that has changed position or an inverted nipple (pushed inward instead of sticking out)

Redness, soreness, rash, or swelling

Step 2: Now, raise your arms and look for the same changes.

Step 3: While you’re at the mirror, look for any signs of fluid coming out of one or both nipples (this could be a watery, milky, or yellow fluid or blood).

Step 4: Next, feel your breasts while lying down, using your right hand to feel your left breast and then your left hand to feel your right breast. Use a firm, smooth touch with the first few finger pads of your hand, keeping the fingers flat and together. Use a circular motion, about the size of a quarter.

Cover the entire breast from top to bottom, side to side — from your collarbone to the top of your abdomen, and from your armpit to your cleavage.

Follow a pattern to be sure that you cover the whole breast. You can begin at the nipple, moving in larger and larger circles until you reach the outer edge of the breast. You can also move your fingers up and down vertically, in rows, as if you were mowing a lawn. This up-and-down approach seems to work best for most women. Be sure to feel all the tissue from the front to the back of your breasts: for the skin and tissue just beneath, use light pressure; use medium pressure for tissue in the middle of your breasts; use firm pressure for the deep tissue in the back. When you’ve reached the deep tissue, you should be able to feel down to your ribcage.

Step 5: Finally, feel your breasts while you are standing or sitting. Many women find that the easiest way to feel their breasts is when their skin is wet and slippery, so they like to do this step in the shower. Cover your entire breast, using the same hand movements described in step 4.

SENIA-Beijing, Rong Ai Rong Le, and Best Buddies China are at it again. They’re known for seeing a need to connect students for socialization between kids who are sometimes isolated and have a more difficult time making friends. With the recent temporary closures of schools and the upcoming holiday, they rolled out a Pen Pal program!

You may have a vision of Pen Pals as kids across the world who you write to on pen and paper, but it’s 2021, after all! Any child aged 9 and older who wants to be Pen Pal Best Buddy for a child with special needs can sign up at the QR code on the flier. You just need to commit to communicating with your pal once a month through a secure communication platform that they will provide.

Students who participated in the Best Buddies program are drawn to a new kind of empathy for students their own age who may not always be verbal or communicative but show their feelings in different ways. It’s a wonderful chance to meet new people outside of your circles and help them not feel so alone at this time.

So sign up to be Pen Pal today!

We’re looking for talented young writers to come up with their own Beijing adaptation of classic fairy tales like “Beauty and The Beast,” “Cinderella,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Snow White,” “Goldilocks and The Three Bears,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” etc. Take the story plot from your favorite childhood fairy tale and adapt it to life here in Beijing.

Many of Beijing’s esteemed international schools submitted their nominations for the Jing Educators Award 2020, celebrating those who dedicate themselves to education, create innovative learning experiences, and maintain outstanding environments for our kids to study in. In this #JingEdAwards series, we’ll share these committed individuals and why they were nominated from now through the end of this year.

The educators in this category lead teachers and students through one of the most important periods in anyone’s educational life: high school. With their diverse international backgrounds, they create engaging curricula that fuse the best of East and West.

Name: Gavin Johnson
Position: Head of Secondary School
School: Beijing Enlighten School

Gavin graduated from the University of Edge Hill in England with a bachelor’s degree in IT and business management and also a post-graduate certificate in Education. He is currently halfway through a master’s degree in educational leadership. Originally from England, Gavin has 19 years of educational experience with 10 of those years being in a school leadership role. He has worked in England, Qatar, and Indonesia, and has spent the past six years in Beijing at international bilingual IB schools.

Gavin believes in fusing local education and international education and has spent his time in leadership developing programs that infuse the best of local knowledge, educational systems, and beliefs with the infrastructure of international education. He believes that although an international education opens many doors for students it is vital that students understand and be proud of their own culture and beliefs and are able to express them in an international setting.

(1/12 2.35pm) Didi suspends rides to Shunyi

Didi has temporarily suspended rides to and from Shunyi District.

(1/11 8.19pm) Health code now required in rideshares

Beginning today, Jan 11, all ridesharing apps like Didi Chuxing and Huaxiaozhu will require passengers to scan with the Beijing Health Kit app when boarding the car within Beijing.

The regulation was announced yesterday at the city’s 206th epidemic press conference, which reiterated that all rideshare drivers must wear masks and check their temperature before operating the vehicle and also stipulated that all drivers receive a nucleic acid test. Officials at the conference also reminded city residents that the government is still looking for passengers who rode in the car with the license plate 京P18E77 and asks that anyone who did so should self-report.

As for Shunyi, the latest orders will suspend drivers who reside within the district and will prevent any rideshares from going into the district, with the exception of rides to Capital Airport (which, while surrounded by Shunyi, is technically part of Chaoyang district).

The new rules come following fears that infected people may have ridden in several rideshare cars.

(1/11 8.17pm) Shipping troubles to and from Shunyi

Currently, residents and businesses have been experiencing major delays, or in some cases a downright inability to send or receive express shipping.

(1/10 7.17pm) New restrictions on ride-hailing in Beijing and Shunyi drivers, two new infections

Temporary new rules on taxis and ride-hailing apps were established at today’s press conference: Beginning tomorrow, all users boarding taxis pr using ride-hailing apps such as Didi will need to register with their Beijing Heath Kit mini-app before entering the vehicle.

In addition, all drivers based in Shunyi are temporarily suspended from driving, and service to Shunyi has been suspended with no entry, no exit, and no dispatch (except to and from the airport).

Today’s city press conference on the Covid-19 situation in Beijing offered up additional details of the asymptomatic case reported this morning: turns out he is a driver for a ride-hailing service, a 27-year-old male, resident of Lianzhuang Village, Zhaoquanying Township, Shunyi, and the son of the other case reported this morning. On Jan 8 he drove his father to the Tsinghua Changgung Hospital near Tiantongyuan in Changping where the dad tested positive (w/symptoms), and he tested positive but asymptomatic. Details of the younger man’s movements are tracked in detail in this Beijing Youth Daily article.

(1/6 6.04pm) Travel restrictions in Beijing

The city is stopping sales of bus and train tickets into Beijing from Shijiazhuang and Handan, two Hebei cities that have seen recent outbreaks. Several on-sections of the highway near these areas have been closed to traffic. The combination of epidemic-related traffic control, the approaching CNY holiday, and freezing temperatures may lead to delays in getting courier packages sent into the city.

(1/5 8.03pm) BIBA follows the latest school teaching and learning requirements

As of Monday (Jan 4) schools have received the following requirements:

A misleading tweet from Global Times sparked discussion today. Those people who entered China via other ports but have not fully observed 21 days of quarantine must finish a full 21 days before going out in Beijing. This does not mean a 21-day hotel quarantine. The quarantine period is and has been “14+7” which means 14 in a hotel and 7 at home.

The quarantine policy remains 14 days hotel quarantine and more stringent enforcement of 7 days at home afterward.

Name: Martin Wigley
Position: English Curriculum Coordinator
School: New Oriental Academy

Martin hails from the UK and has more than seven years of teaching experience. He holds a master’s degree in education, a master’s degree in creative writing, and a bachelor’s degree in media studies. He began his teaching career in Bangkok, where he worked as an ESL teacher at a number of prestigious private schools. This gave him a great foundation in teaching English to those students who are approaching the language with little-to-no background knowledge. Later, he began working as a homeroom teacher at an international school where he gained valuable experience with inquiry-based curriculums.

Martin is currently the grade 5 homeroom teacher at NOA and was recently appointed as the English curriculum coordinator. Martin places a lot of emphasis on inquiry and creating a learning environment that encourages students to inquire and think critically about the world around them. He believes that it is important to provide students with the tools to develop important life skills such as self-management and social skills. Additionally, he values meaningful and effective assessment techniques and believes that assessment should be an ongoing process that not only assesses student progress but also informs future learning and helps to refine curricula.

Position: English Teacher/EPQ Coordinator
School: Wellington College Tianjin

In the UK, Louise studied for her BA in English and philosophy at the University of Bristol, before going on to study for both a PGCE and Master of Education degree at the University of Cambridge. During her post-graduate studies, Louise specialized in researching the role of reading in secondary schools and is keen on developing whole-school strategies that motivate young people to read. After her second year of teaching, Louise was afforded a fantastic opportunity to accompany a group of sixth-form students around the island of Borneo for an entire month; a trip that sparked her desire to travel and teach internationally. Last academic year, Louise undertook a mentoring program run by the University of Cambridge to become a mentor for trainee English teachers, resulting in her mentoring and supporting two PGCE English students through their training. When she is not teaching, Louise enjoys yoga, reading, and watching live theatre.
