This conference brought together more than 1,500 students from major international schools across Asia.

The delegates from the school’s Model United Nations (MUN) Club represented France and India and joined in separate committees as members of the General Assemblies (GAs), the Human Right Council (HRC), and the Security Council at Hwa Chong Institution.

BWYA delegates representing France and India

Seven of the delegates were newcomers, while the returning students performed well in different activities such as drafting resolutions for specific issues or topics and making points of information (POIs) and speeches for or against any resolution whenever possible.

THIMUN 2017 was the first international conference in which Grade 10 students Spring Xia and Amanda Zhang double-entered at the Security Council. “Delegates in the Security Council are more aggressive than those in some of the general assemblies. It was tough,” Zhang said. “Their questions are trickier to answer; they will slam your draft resolution directly if your word choice in your speech is inaccurate. Also, the veto power is powerful yet detrimental.” Nevertheless, the delegates stood firmly to their resolutions and debated over the aspects that could have made their positions less dominant. Eventually, the clauses that they wrote all passed and the two delegates rejoiced over their “victory.”

BWYA delegates Spring Xia (standing, center) and Amanda Zhang (right) debating in Security Council with double delegation of France

At the second General Assembly (Economic and Financial Committee), which included 150 delegates, Penelope Zhang’s resolution was among the submissions that were thoroughly discussed. Although her resolution was not passed, Zhang said she looked forward to other prospects. “I was honored to see my draft resolution being debated for four hours in total over the course of two days. It tells me that my efforts had been recognized. I am sure that a little discouragement will become my force to become better next time,” she said.

Another BWYA delegate, Selina Zhao, said that the conference helped her improve her English communication skills. Prior to it, she used to sit quietly at her desk whenever debating a sample resolution during club sessions. “My English isn’t perfect, but after THIMUN, I’m not afraid to speak and let my thoughts be heard. I was able to make POIs to other more experienced delegates and spoke more actively in club sessions.”

BWYA’s MUN directors Sophie Lauratet and Cosmina Lacsu and accompanying teacher Julia Zhu supported and encouraged the students over the week’s stay in Singapore.

Had it not been for the huge surprise received by my mom when we first heard of the drastic hairstyle changes proposed by the London Loft stylists, this September edition of Indulge would be another one of those about mom-pampering experiences. However, my mom is not the kind of lady who is nonchalant about having a large portion of her hair cut off without prior notice, and I confess my part in the “blame” for not explaining the details of this salon experience to her earlier. But it is safe to say that this pleasant little surprise did not turn out to be disappointing to us at all; rather, it lead to an unprecedented and innovative approach to having a mother-daughter photo-shoot instead of the typically huge makeover done by our magazine in previous issues.

Since my mom slightly withdrew from the idea of completely transforming herself, we decided that she and I could each have a smaller-scale makeover and then do a lovely picture together. My mom has always been my best friend with whom I have no untold secrets, and I am really impressed by how she can care so much for me and still excellently perform all her duties at her company. As for the former, my mom has devoted all her care to me, and has spent every free occasion with me, from the time when I was an infant to now. She also inspired my passion for reading literature. Speaking of which, even though Charles Dickens said in one of his renowned novels that “every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other”, my mom and I are certainly no mystery to each other. My mom has worked in several foreign companies including IBM in Beijing, and has always found time for family despite job pressures.

This is our first time at London Loft, and we found the environment to be comfortable. Leo, an amazing stylist at the salon, decided the best looks for us at the start of the makeover. Leo told me that small locks of my hair can be dyed brown, and then pulled up into a bun after some cutting and major braiding work. For my mom, Leo didn’t change a lot except to pull her hair up into a beautiful and complicated bun and apply some moderate make-up.

Following the makeover, my mom and I were both very excited with our new hairstyles; especially me, since I have never dyed my hair before! My mom told me that when she went back to her office, all of her friends exclaimed and complimented her on how great she looked, and were excited by the new look. However, we know from this experience that not everyone can experience such an exquisite makeover as London Loft were able to provide!

Step 4
Some hairspray is added to mom’s hair to make it into a perfect bun.

Penelope’s hair is blow-dried to add volume.

Step 8

Who can forget the mesmerizing folk tale of Cinderella? Having been adapted for animation, musicals and plays, books, and movies, the story of this young girl kindles a fire of passion and love inside the hearts of little kids and even adults. The instant the glass slipper fits on Cinderella’s foot still sends a jolt of excitement and exuberance, and maybe even goose bumps!

This timeless classic has been given a youthful twist by the Beijing World Youth Academy (BWYA)’s Theater Troupe together with the school’s orchestra team and Visual Arts students from grades 7 to 10.

(BWYA Spring Musical Cinderella Poster Design)

The Spring Musical: Cinderella was the biggest and most complicated musical production in terms of staff and performers participating, props, background designs, makeup designs, music, stage lighting, and sound in BWYA history. The double challenge for students and teachers this year revolved around the chosen play.

(Issac Zhou as Prince Christopher, left; Finn Holmes as King Maxmillian, right; Photographer: Mr. Steven Proud)

For this year’s production, the main cast from BWYA Theater Troupe included Angelina Zhang (Cinderella), Issac Zhou (Prince Christopher), Anastasia Borodina (Evil Stepmother), Benjamin Li and Linda Zhang (Evil Stepsisters), and Angel An (Fairy Godmother). Aside from the contributing cast on stage, backstage staff including lighting technicians, makeup artists, sound mixers, and run crew (props supervisors) also worked hard to make the production appealing and satisfying.

On the performance stage were three panels, each made up of three smaller blocks showing different sceneries, and which could be turned to show scene changes.

(Three panels on the stage depicting different scenes, and movable boards at the front showing the village scene)

The musical was a co-production by professionals and BWYA students. Creative director Adam Combs, music director and producer Jan Rues, costume director Fabrizio Pacitti, set illustrator Paola Ibarra, and vocal coach Stina Chu were joined by students: assistant director Rendolm Qian, rehearsal stage manager Ivan Song, wardrobe manager Selena Gu, and production stage managers Audrey Chen and Martin Li. They all worked non-stop and were a big part of the reason why this play turned out to be so successful and so hard to say farewell to in the end.

I worked as a makeup artist for actresses while my colleague Yvonne designed and did the actors’ makeup during the rehearsals and the final performance. I must say the experience was a real challenge because I had never learned how to apply makeup. So the only words that I used to encourage myself were, “I will learn.”

I believe that makeup is a beautiful and expressive form of art. Not only can makeup create more attractive and appealing actors, but it can also help them develop their characters, just like Yvonne and I did with the evil stepmother’s design. We made the eyeliner tilt higher at the corner of the eye to illustrate her proud, arrogant, and flirtatious characteristics. This was a big part of the reason why I volunteered to take the opportunity, even though I am not especially keen at it. After watching so many tutorials on YouTube and taking various pieces of advice from the wardrobe manager Selena, I gradually grasped the key concepts of makeup and realized exactly how enjoyable and amazing it was. Repeating the same thing over and over is always lackluster, however, trying a new skill and achieving a good result is innovative and meaningful.

The final performance was held on April 1 and the whole cast and crew put on their best despite minor technical glitches and performance errors. During the scene where Cinderella transformed into an absolutely beautiful and stunning lady and arrived at the palace in a golden carriage, all in the audience were clapping and shouting, sending a wave of satisfaction and felicity to our hearts knowing that all our efforts and hard work put in were finally rewarded.

In an interview with the director, Adam Combs, he said that this year’s spring musical was indeed quite challenging and complicated, “but all of the actors gave their best performances and it turned out so well and spectacular in the end. BWYA have another pending drama production, a stage play in this year’s fall.”

One of the main cast, Anastasia Borodina who played the Evil Stepmother said she tried to express her character’s complex personality, calling it an “interesting character.” “I believe the Evil Stepmother has niceness in her but doesn’t really know how to express it. I think she sees a lot of Cinderella in herself and it brings back memories of her own childhood, which is maybe why she can be a bit tough on Cinderella sometimes.” The Evil Stepsister, Joy, was actually portrayed by Benjamin Li. He said his decision of acting in the Evil Stepsister role was that “The fact that she is so horrible to people makes the role a lot of fun as I get to say things and act things that I wouldn’t dream of doing in real life. Furthermore, it allows me to produce a dynamic, charismatic performance, and improve my drama skills.” Actor Michael Yang played several roles including a little white mouse and a royal palace guest. He said that even if he took on several supporting roles, he still gave 100 percent. “I believe that no one is born an actor, but through hard work and giving our best we can make people enjoy our performance.”

The BWYA crew began preparation for the Spring Musical Cinderella as early as August. Most of the crew members said they felt sad when the musical came to a close as they grew close to each other during the eight months of preparation. I told myself, “Who can promise that there will be no missing, no flashbacks and no returning to the moment that would have been otherwise gone? No one.”

(Grand Finale: On the stage are all the backstage and orchestra members who greatly contributed)

Having joined a musical about a popular story reminiscent of our childhood moments granted me and other BWYA students the chance to embrace our aspirations once again. Even though the show came to a close, its impact and memories will never fade away as they were imprinted in all of the BWYA Theater Troupe’s hearts.

While nonchalantly walking past a street in the US, I randomly saw an advertisement on the window of a shop, which said “Allow yourself to be a beginner. No one starts off being excellent.” I couldn’t even remember why I laid my eyes upon it. It was plain and had nothing except for those twelve words. “Nothing too special about this,” I thought. But because of its simplicity, I started to ponder what the message really meant. It’s not until last month when I did finally begin to unravel what that mysterious and seemingly-ordinary copy was all about.

Together with the delegation from the Model United Nations Club at Beijing World Youth Academy (BWYA), I went to Singapore for The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) Conference on November 20, 2016. The annual conference is organized by the Hwa-Chong Institution in Singapore and is open to all secondary school students. Our team was composed of 12 students from 9th grade up to 11th grade and two teachers, Ms. Sophie Lauratet and Ms. Hacina Reienskiöld.

I have been dreaming of working at the United Nations since I was nine years old. Back then, I had always thought that the UN was an extraordinary place, created to bring peace and harmony to the world. I thought then all country representatives and delegates at the UN were the smartest and kindest people in society. When I was young, I would write notes, poems, and prose about my UN dream. Those were just wishes and my most desperate longing, but the most daring prospect of actually getting inside or working at the UN had never crossed my mind. But the conference changed it forever.

All of my hopes and daydreams over the past years had become a delightful reality; however, brand new challenges had also quietly sneaked in like an intruder. Being in our BWYA MUN club has pushed me to analyze many critical issues and topics and approach them with a range of solutions. It also helps us improve our public speaking skills and teaches us how a real United Nations works — from collaborating with other people to addressing global economic trends, political relationships, and human rights issues. As one participant Michael Yang believed that THIMUN challenged his skills to think critically and work together with others. He said, “It is very interesting, just simply hearing and discussing diverse ideas from others taught me a lot.”

I was nervous and slightly hopeless on the eve of the THIMUN conference. But those emotions were not because of my lack of preparation or the number of speeches that I need to work on. It’s the fear of the unknown. I was assigned to the General Assembly’s Economic and Financial committee — but I had no experience with it at all. On the conference day, the General Assembly president told everyone at the opening ceremony to step out of your comfort zone.

I admit I’m a beginner and I allow myself to be like one. No one can be successful from the beginning, so why not venture out into areas that you are not exactly comfortable with and be excellent in them? My co-participant Anastasia Borodina said the conference gave us the chance to challenge ourselves. “We’d met brilliant people who reminded us to show the best of our abilities at all time.”

Throughout the THIMUN conference, I gradually realized that no one will feel sorry for you or attempt to give a helping hand if you are frightened and nervous. No one will notice you for being timid, secluded, and inarticulate. In a room of more than 150 people, if you are willing to sit in the corner and don’t want to speak up, then congratulations, you’re in the right place. But if you also wish to explore new areas that you are not keen to, or not scared to let your voice and thoughts be heard, then allow me to offer you my sincerest congratulations — you’re also in the right place.

Even though BWYA students had been separated into different committees and assemblies, I always received messages in our group chat like, “Oh my gosh, I am the main submitter of our resolution! 1” and “Guess what? I became the co-submitter of our resolution!” These messages randomly appearing on your WeChat really did give me a warm feeling. Despite being in different rooms to debate about various topics, we knew we would succeed in the end, no matter where we started from. Actually, I also achieved being the one-and-only head co-submitter in our resolution group and passed one of my amendments for other groups’ resolutions in later debate sessions.

My memory of THIMUN is still fresh even until now, and my passion for it has never lessened a single bit. It gave me so much more than I had ever imagined—it taught me what teamwork, bravery, and friendship meant, and what was necessary to give up while exploring. And more than anything, what the Model United Nations was all about.

As the delegate of Venezuela from BWYA in this conference, Spring Xia, told me she learned about how the Model United Nations works and worked together with people she didn’t know. She said, “It was tiring, but it was fun!” BWYA student Christina Zhao also believes that being able to participate in THIMUN 2016 is really an awesome experience. She said, “I made some new friends and we are still chatting online! I feel very satisfied because I challenged myself and really stepped out of my comfort zone!” One of our club directors, Ms. Reienskiöld, thought the conference was amazing. She said, “The student delegates went up and did speeches. They achieved so much more than what they believed that they can do.”

This was certainly a special experience in which we gave our best and bravely stepped out of our comfort zones. In the process, we had discovered our inner selves. We might have started out as beginners, but does that matter now? We have just embarked on a journey to becoming the successful ones in the future. And some day, some time, when we get slightly tired on the way, we’ll just pause and look back to this precious and unforgettable memory of 2016 THIMUN Singapore Conference with a grin, and continue our pursuit to success.

(Note: The main submitter and a co-submitter of a resolution is similar to a leader and co-leader of a group of approximately 10-15 people)

My father, because he is very focused at what he does all the time.

When you were younger, what did you want to be when you were growing up? What do you want to be now?
I wanted to become professional soccer player, now I want to work in an international company to improve my language skills.

How do you relax?
I usually like to watch Japanese comedy and drama when stressed.

What was your most embarrassing moment?
When I almost got expelled from school because I didn’t go to school, I lied to them. I just pretended to go to school, but I actually didn’t go. So when my homeroom teacher found out, she said she couldn’t keep me in her class anymore, she wanted to expel me. That was two years ago; therefore I had to restart from grade 10 again two years ago. From that moment I started to study hard and my grades have improved a lot since then.

Which book changed your life?
I don’t read books very often, but one Japanese book, Birigyaru (ビリギャル), has changed my life. This is a story about a girl who is not good at studying, and always the last one of the class. She never studied in her life. One day she met the teacher in an academy, and the teacher told her that he would teach her and after a year he will help her to get into the 3rd best university in Japan. At last she made it. When I almost got expelled from school, I read this book. The book taught me to never give up hope.

When did you last cry, and why?
My friend’s graduation ceremony. Because it was awesome.

What is your most treasured possession?
My most treasured possessions are my clothes. I wear Givenchy, Thom Browne, Marcelo Burlon, Saint Laurent Paris, Christian Louboutin, Kenzo, Vatements, Versace, and Off White.

Who would play you in the film of your life?
Kasumi Arimura from Birigyaru ビリギャル

If you could edit your past, what would you change?
I would change nothing.

What advice would you give other students at your school?
Study hard and you will be all good.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you so far?
If I never ever work hard, I’ll be garbage.

What single thing would improve the quality of your life?
Study more.

Where would you most like to be right now?
University.

What trait do you most dislike in others?
Selfishness.

What trait do you most dislike in yourself?
Weakness.

What is your favorite word?
Friends.

What is your least favorite word?
Love.

What is your greatest achievement?
I haven’t achieved it yet.

What is your greatest fear?
Not getting into university. This article originally appeared on page 38 of the of beijingkids magazine.

This winter, Richard Clayderman, the most successful pianist in the world will return to China for his 2016 China tour.

Richard Clayderman is a French pianist who has released many classic albums that still remain very popular today, including pieces like “Ballade pour Adeline” and “Mariage D’amour”. See here for more information on Richard Clayderman.

Clayderman has recorded over 1,300 melodies so far, and has also created a repertoire, which includes his classic works incorporated with a new romantic style. These works are all his original pieces, so upon hearing the first few notes of his music, audiences who are familiar with Clayderman’s style will instantly recognize that this is none other than Clayderman’s work.

Despite his successes, Clayderman still works hard and is determined to bring his best performances to audiences all over the world. He devotes a lot of his time to performing in concerts. One of Clayderman’s records is 200 shows in only 250 days.

Understanding the difficulty involved in achieving success is a very valuable life lessons for young children. Perhaps knowing Clayderman’s story will teach children that even though all you see on stage are one’s successes, you never know how much one has worked, or how many failures one has faced offstage. Personally, I believe Richard Clayderman serves as a great role model for children—if you want to accomplish something really important, you should do your best no matter how hard you need to work. His responsible attitude and talent not only earned him popularity in Europe and Asia, but also the undoubted title- “The most successful pianist in the world”.

There were eight of us then, so we decided to have a party inside the separate room, which included a foosball table, a table for Air Hockey, video games, KTV, and a table for Texas Hold’em Poker.
As a 14 year-old girl, I am super embarrassed to say that I had never played foosball in my life. But the game was fun! I played foosball with my friends for around two hours without any restrictions and my wrists were still hurting two days later. While I played foosball and later air hockey, the others sang KTV, played video games, or crowded around board games. After this unforgettable experience, I can say with every bit of confidence that teenagers and kids all should not miss the chance to have fun in Meeple factory.
Located on No.2 Lizexi Road, the Meeple Factory has been open for one year and mainly features a large collection of board games for people of all ages to play. These activities will certainly rouse your curiosity and swiftly lift up your spirits.

Right in the center of the factory are two large walls that contain over 200 different kinds of board games. Others recommended Splendor, Terra Mystica, and Blood Rage. I consider Ten Days in Europe as the best.
Meeple Factory is suitable for ages 5 years old and up, but mostly from 14-28 years old. I did not see people aged over 40 during my visit, but certainly some small kids. The manager, Ms. Wang, has very capable English as she graduated from a university in Hong Kong. I didn’t meet her when we last played in the factory or when I went for an interview, but according to the staff, she is very kind and helpful. If English-speaking-only teens plan to play, communication will not be a problem because some of the staff also know how to explain different activities and board games in English.
Some come to Meeple Factory right after school or work to relax. Decorations can be provided for birthday parties and company end of year parties. Please note the separate room requires a minimum of eight guests.
Frequent visitors have the privilege of a 85 to 90 percent discount. Some discounts are also available during special holidays or celebrations, for example, on Chinese Valentine’s Day, couples will get 50 percent off and festive games.

On the isolated and deserted wasteland of the Devon moors, something cruel and wicked has landed. The Baskerville family members are all threatened by death, and not even the bravest men are safe from danger. They have realized that legend and superstition are now combined to form the most terrible and monstrous of all crimes.

This mysterious case concerns the strange death of Sir Charles Baskerville with the possibility of becoming the heir to all his fortunes the likely object of murder. Sir Charles Baskerville had died suddenly. He was, perhaps, the victim of a ghostly hound that has been believed to haunt his family due to an age-old curse.

Under these circumstances, meet Sherlock Holmes—the world’s most renowned detective, as he tries to solve one of the greatest mystery and crime cases that has ever occurred to him and the world—The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Join Chapterhouse and Sherlock Holmes for a memorable night with your best investigative abilities as you unravel this mystery filled with confusion, suspense, and tension.

In the winter of 1999, the Chapterhouse Theater Company of Britain took its first few steps towards becoming one of the few European theater companies that performs in an environmental background with stars and attractive gardens. The company has continuously been changing itself in order to adapt to new audiences every year, but its determination to produce classic works in a possibly enchanted place has not changed over the years. See here for more information about the Chapterhouse Theater Company in Britain.

As the Nottingham Post once wrote, “Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s tale of the dreaded curse of the Baskervilles received a fresh twist in the Chapter House Theater Company production. The hound’s bright red eyes, snarling teeth and the howls across the park proved the spectacle of the evening.”
