International Women’s Day is way more than a day when restaurants offer free dessert to women or HR drops off a rose at your desk at the office. It’s a day to honor and celebrate women and girls and to recognize their contributions to society. But what if you’ve got kindergarteners at home? Talking about the women who’ve changed our world can go right over their heads. So, if they’re still young, but you want to start teaching them about the significance of International Women’s Day, try simplifying it.

Start With Simple Stories

Begin by sharing simple and age-appropriate stories about strong and inspiring women. For example, you can tell the story of Amelia Earhart, the famous aviator who was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Use colorful pictures and simple language to describe how Amelia was brave and followed her dreams. Another great story could be about Malala Yousafzai, who fought for girls’ education and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Explain to the kids that Malala was very brave because she stood up for what she believed in, even when it was difficult.

Use Songs and Rhymes

Songs and rhymes are a fantastic way to capture the attention of young children. You can create or find a simple song about women’s achievements. For instance, a song like “She Can Do It” with lyrics like “She can build a house, she can fly a plane, she’s strong and smart, in every way again” can be catchy and help kids remember the message.

Role Play

Set up a role-playing activity where the kids can pretend to be different women with various jobs. You can provide props such as doctor’s coats, chef hats, and artist aprons. Encourage the kids to act out what these women do.

Talk About Their Moms and Female Caregivers

Help kids connect International Women’s Day to the important women in their own lives. Ask them to share what they love about their moms, grandmas, or other female caregivers. You can have a discussion about how these women take care of them, teach them new things, and make them feel loved. Download a free copy of our International Women’s Day worksheet for kids to help you get started.

Art Projects

Engage kids in art projects that celebrate women. Another idea is to make cards or flowers to give to the special women in their lives as a token of appreciation. This not only allows the kids to express their creativity but also reinforces the idea of showing respect and love for women.

Watch Short Videos

There are many short, animated videos available online that are designed to introduce International Women’s Day to young children. These videos often use bright colors, simple characters, and engaging stories to convey the message.

International Women’s Day, celebrated on Mar 8, is a time to honor and acknowledge the achievements of women globally. While many businesses express their support for women by offering discounts and promotions, it’s crucial to recognize that these gestures can sometimes reinforce stereotypes rather than empower women. A half-off drink promotion or a free dessert is great and all, but as a woman, I would rather have equal pay become a norm and harassment and sexist social expectations eliminated.

International Women’s Day has a rich history rooted in the fight for women’s rights and gender equality. It serves as a reminder of the progress made and the work still needed to create a more inclusive world. While it’s commendable that businesses want to participate, offering discounts on stereotypically feminine items, such as pink drinks, may inadvertently perpetuate gender norms.

Promotions that focus on aesthetics rather than substance can undermine the true purpose of International Women’s Day. Instead of reinforcing outdated notions, businesses can take this opportunity to celebrate women’s achievements, promote gender-inclusive spaces, and advocate for meaningful change. Engaging in educational initiatives or supporting women-led events can be more impactful ways for businesses to contribute positively.

As we commemorate International Women’s Day, let’s move beyond superficial gestures and work towards creating a society where women are celebrated and respected every day. Businesses can play a vital role in fostering genuine empowerment by promoting inclusivity, challenging stereotypes, and actively supporting initiatives that contribute to the advancement of women. It’s time to shift the focus from pink drinks to meaningful actions that make a lasting impact on gender equality.

So, let’s take this opportunity to highlight a few International Women’s Day events happening in Beijing with the right message.

The month of March started on a strong note for women with International Women’s Day, but after the celebratory vibe of champagne luncheons, conferences and cocktail events, how are we setting up young girls, soon to be women, to carry the torch into the future?

The Women Empowerment Council (WEC)’s Girls in STEMM initiative is one such future-forward program that wants to make a difference for generations to come. The program aims to build a bridge between girls and the professional world in order to develop their awareness, knowledge and confidence in the various STEMM fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine.

Su Cheng Harris-Simpson, Founder and CEO of SCHS Asia, explained the inspiration for the program: “The Girls in STEMM initiative came about from a discussion at the Women’s Advisory Council that was looking for more women working in the STEMM industries. We asked the question, ‘Why aren’t there more girls in engineering?’ and we believe the issue comes from a disconnect where girls can’t see how they impact the greater good working in such industries. Through Girls in STEMM, these companies can show the great careers and opportunities for the girls to impact the world for good.” Michael Zhu, Global VP and Managing Director of HPE China, said: “Research shows that we don’t have enough women in tech. Girls lose interest in STEMM during middle school so it’s critical to give them the exposure to cultivate their curiosity then.”

The Girls in STEMM program allows innovative companies to serve as a role model in demonstrating strong female presence in their workplace, thereby inspiring girls to pursue their passions in STEMM.

Since its inception in 2021, the program has seen successful runs in both Shanghai and Beijing, with girls from Grade 9 to Grade 11 from Keystone Academy, Canadian International School of Beijing (CISB), Dulwich College Beijing (DCB), and International School of Beijing (ISB) visiting WEC partner companies such as ExxonMobil, Merck, and Henkel.

Feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive. “This program solidified my interest to study occupational psychology, as I found it very interesting the extent to which companies are influenced by their culture,” said one participant. Another participant shared: “This experience opened me up to a range of new career opportunities with a STEMM degree. After learning about all of the wonderful majors in STEMM, I have decided to study biochemistry/pre-med because I love the idea of working in the labs!”

Mar 8 is International Women’s Day. In honor of all the Queens who are crushing it and living their best lives, Jingkids will be profiling some of Beijing’s fiercest female entrepreneurs. Like Queen Beyonce says, “Who run the world? Girls!”

If you know a Girl Boss you think we should profile, don’t hesitate to shoot us a message at editor@beijing-kids.com.

Meet Sophie Su, an Australia-raised expat who has been living in Beijing with her family for 15 years. She and her husband started Pingo Space six years ago as a place for children to develop creative and critical thinking skills as well as explore their own passions and potential. Or as Su puts it, “helping people confidently discover their unique purpose and develop the skills to pursue it.”

She does that through a form known as Project-Based Learning, or PBL. It’s incredibly popular in the West but surprisingly few places offer it outside of international schools here in China. Rather than teaching to a test or simply inputting knowledge, her programs present kids with real-world scenarios or problems while guiding them to develop potential solutions.

But the unique content hasn’t insulated Pingo Space from all the changes and challenges of the past few years. The one-two punch of the pandemic and new government regulations for the education sector have been difficult. Likewise, figuring out how to pivot from in-person to online programming that stays true to the mission has been no easy task. Given the turbulent and volatile nature of the times, some education companies have been forced to compromise on their original missions, attempting to stay afloat in these choppy new waters. But Su has a different perspective. “I’m not trying to be everything to everyone. We have a really loyal base of students and parents who have really transformed through our programs and need the structured, creative space we provide. Our team has remained focused on that despite pressure to become more general in our programming and service.” Despite the curveballs, Su and her staff have remained positive. In fact, it’s the people she gets to work with that represent the real upside to entrepreneurship for her.

“I believe we have an amazing product and a dedicated team. I love that I can hire the people that I really want to collaborate with and together paint the future of Pingo Space.”

Ironically, however, it also represents the downside. “I love that I can decide on the direction of my company fully without any outside distractions…[but]the pressure of giving the wrong direction which may lead to failure is difficult.”

When asked about the future of education in China, Su says it boils down to “developing the whole child, a unique happy individual who is confident and a true global citizen.”

For Su that doesn’t just mean focusing on the kids and families she serves – she wants her staff to be active global citizens as well. Each member of her team is more than just an educator or administrator. They are actively engaged members of the community, with their own side gigs and passion projects. Members of her team sit on local charity boards, run food blogs, organize local book clubs, are pursuing additional advanced degrees, and are involved in community theatre and music projects. “How can I expect kids to learn how to be engaged citizens if their role models aren’t?” asks Su. “We encourage our team to have outside interests and pursue them. It makes them better educators, better colleagues, and better community members.”

Her passionate team and the kids they serve are what get Su out of bed in the morning. “I wake up every day because I have the passion to help develop the untapped potential of children. I am attracted to education as it allows me to see kids grow in real-time and offer them something unique.”

I’m going to be honest, every year when Women’s Day rolls around I find myself rolling my eyes at the restaurants and bars that promote their Women’s Day with a pink flyer that say something along the lines of “buy-one-get-one free special cocktails”. Having worked in hospitality, to me “special cocktails” usually means whatever the bartender decides to throw together last minute with some low-shelf liquor and juice. Anything to fill glasses fast while keeping costs low.

So, having sifted through this year’s Women’s Day promotions, I’m thrilled to find that there are more than few venues that have decided to celebrate this holiday the right way – by giving back to the community.

Free Coffee for Everyone at Moka Bros!

On Monday (Mar 8) every Moka Bros in China will be giving away free coffee to anyone who donates to Educating Girls of Rural China (EGRC). How much would you like to contribute? Maybe the price of a cup of coffee or maybe a little more? No matter what the amount, donate by scanning the QR code in the poster below to give directly to EGRC and show your payment receipt to the Moka Bros cashier for your free coffee.

Sale at Roundabout

From Mar 6-8 all products in the trendy section will be 20% off. All clothes, shoes, and toys in the main section of the store will be RMB 30 off with a purchase of over RMB 150. If you can’t make it to their store, Roundabout’s WeChat mini-program has nearly 6,000 items to choose from.

Roundabout is managed and operated by volunteers. Money spent at Roundabout goes to help children in need. To learn more about Roundabout, scan the QR code below.

Charity Fitness Workshops

Mommy & Me dance fitness, women’s self-defense, women’s strength, and Jindafit. Three She-EOs have organized four fitness workshops throughout the month of March where all the money raised goes to help a good cause. All the proceeds raised from this month’s fitness events are donated to Educating Girls of Rural China (EGRC).

To book any of the fitness workshops, scan the QR code on the poster and speak directly with a bilingual reservation person from Warrior One who’ll help you book your spot for the workshop. To learn more about EGRC visit their website at www.egrc.ca.

EGRC’s mission is to empower women in rural regions of Western China to escape the cycle of poverty through education. EGRC has three primary goals: Sponsor female students from rural regions with their four-year undergraduate studies in Chinese universities; sponsor female high school (grade 10 to 12) students with their three-year studies in rural region high schools, and assist EGRC-sponsored students with BA diplomas to enroll in postgraduate programs offered by Canadian universities. EGRC’s girls have a 100 percent graduation rate, with two of their top graduates having gone on to Tsinghua University and Manitoba University in Canada, respectively.

March is Women’s Month, the annually observed month where we celebrate women’s contributions throughout history. The actual celebration of Women’s History Month grew out of a weeklong celebration of women’s contributions to culture, history, and the society organized by the school district of Sonoma, California, in 1978. Presentations were given at dozens of schools, hundreds of students participated in a “Real Woman” essay contest and a parade was held in downtown Santa Rosa. A few years later the idea caught on in other communities and in 1980 US President Jimmy Carter declared March 8 as National Women’s History Week.

Each year all around the world people have been celebrating women’s strength and contribution to society. Annoyingly, over the years some have turned Women’s Day into a marketing gimmick with bars pushing buy-one-get-one-free pink cocktails and shops promoting Women’s Day discounts. What message is that sending? Thanks for your contribution to society, here are some discounts because all women like cheap pink cocktails and shopping…? Um… pass!

In the past, I’ve worked for companies where HR left a rose on our desks on Women’s Day. Thanks for the sweet thought HR, but I’d much rather have equal pay and a work environment without sexist comments or harassment instead. But the flower is a nice touch…

This year, before I get annoyed by the sexist Women’s Day promos around town, there’s one that I can really get behind. Something that’s sending the right message.

International Women’s Day in China can be a bit of a surprise the first time you experience it. This global campaign, which has a history of over a century, has been for the longest time a rather low key affair in many of our home countries. I certainly hadn’t seen it “celebrated” on a big scale during my time living in Germany, Austria or England. But in China this day is a big deal. And not in the way you might think.

While the IWD website has created the hashtag #beboldforchange and is trying to inspire people to tackle such issues as the gender pay gap, in China Women’s Day is seen by many as another opportunity for men to express their love for the women in their lives by – old China hands might know where this is going – buying them presents. Employed women get half a day off work, which many decide spend shopping. For businesses this means, rather than discussing how to increase female leadership, is another opportunity to crank up the sales and ride the waves of consumerism. In this way, International Women’s Day in China is much like Single’s Day or Valentine’s Day, a day to treat yourself of your loved one by acquiring discounted earthly possessions.

Granted, the original aim of the day isn’t entirely lost here in China. In fact, there is an indication of a rediscovery of sorts of the true meaning of IWD with increasingly interesting talks found particularly in Beijing by successful women and addressing important questions such as how to help women advance in life.

There are, however, also quite a few events that leave one scratching one’s head. Probably the most confusing Women’s Day events out there include women wearing wedding dresses and high heels in a run to welcome the day that is meant to celebrate “the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women” (IWD website). Previous years have seen similarly baffling meetups. In 2015 “Hot moms present flash mob in downtown Nanjing” was the headline of an article that went on to describe how the “beauties” belly-danced to mark IWD. Safe to say, this was probably not what the initiators of the campaign had in mind.

Yet, International Women’s Day in China has also increasingly become a time for gender activism and the suppression of such. Who can forget the “Feminist Five”, who were detained in 2015 for handing out flyers in the Beijing underground on sexual harassment. While their story made waves internationally, and they were released in the end, they have spoken of continuing surveillance by police – particularly during subsequent Women’s Days. This year, the latest uproar has come as the most influential feminist Weibo account, 女权之声 “Feminist Voice”, was frozen for 30 days, allegedly for forwarding an article translated into Chinese calling for women to stand up to Trump and go on strike on 8 March, Women’s Day. Coincidentally or not – depending on your interpretation – the duration of the shutdown spans International Women’s Day and the annual parliamentary meetings currently taking place. Attempts by the owners to get the account unblocked in time by starting an international campaign have fallen on deaf ears.

Weibo’s actions are at odds with the official stance of the government. Xi Jinping stated to the UN the government’s commitment to advancing women’s rights in response to the detention of the Feminist Five and the resulting international outrage. Numerous leading Chinese politicians are eager to affirm that ending discrimination is a priority in today’s China. Sure, there are signs of the tide changing, such as the Inspiring Women project of the British Council in China. Still, all efforts are tainted by the fact that on International Women’s Day 2017, it’s the voice of China’s women that has once again been silenced.

In honor of International Women’s Day, Instituto Cervantes will exhibit Análgas, a display of women’s photography. The photographers in the exhibition all have a Spanish background, but have lived in Beijing, giving their photography a bicultural perspective. The exhibition reflects and defends images of flesh and blood women, celebrating the realness of the female form against the current trends of digital alteration. An opening party with a film screening will be held on International Women’s Day.
