Check out this year’s deals at locations only a short flight away from Beijing.

HARBIN
Famous for its ice sculptures and skating on the frozen river, Harbin is also a convenient place to go skiing from Beijing.
Where to stay?
Club Med, Yabuli: 200km from Harbin city is Yabuli ski resort, the largest ski resort in China. Club Med Yabuli does a great family package deal with activities including Nordic walking, flying trapeze and yoga as well as use of facilities such as the spa by beauty brand L’OCCITANE.
DEAL: The package (including accommodation, open gourmet food and bar, ski passes and lessons, evening entertainment, and kids activities, including activities like making craft masks, cooking pizza, playing group games, and kids ski lessons) starts from around RMB 5,700 per person for 5 days in December. Skip the January peak season for better prices in 2017.
Getting There
Flights are only 2 hours from Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA), or you can take the Beijing-Harbin High-speed Railway (6-7 hours).

JAPAN
Japan is home to some of the most famous ski resorts in Asia, and boasts high quality powder snow, which has earned Japan an international reputation among skiers and boarders alike. There are over 500 resorts to choose from, featuring luxury hotels, onsen hot springs (the perfect post-ski pastime!), lively restaurants, and friendly locals. The most renowned resorts are located in the north of Japan, on the island of Hokkaido. Family-friendly packages are often discounted at early-bird prices, and there is plenty to do – most of these resorts have a variety of activities such as sledding and play zones for young children, some even with childcare rooms, as well as activities for adults aside from snowboarding and skiing.
Where to go?
Niseko is known internationally and has been voted the best overall resort in Japan by the powderhounds.com. Sub-arctic Siberian winds mixed with the warmer Sea of Japan create the perfect climate for regular, light powder snowfall throughout the whole winter, and the view of nearby Mount Yotei, a dormant volcano, and the Shiribetsu River also make it the perfect destination for photographers. This resort is also one of the few places in Japan that offer top-quality off-trail skiing. These areas are accessible through special gates and guided tours – helicopter tours even allow you to ski off-piste on the volcano Yotei!
Niseko is made up of three main resort areas and an all-inclusive ski pass allows you to access all of the slopes on the mountain (Grand Hirafu, Niseko Village, Annupuri).
DEAL: A 5-day pass for peak season (December 10, 2016 – March 20, 2017) is approximately RMB 1,470/880 for adults/children.
Grand Hirafu is the largest of the resorts at Niseko, and is adjacent to the town Hirafu at the foot of the mountain. Here is the most popular place for night skiing, as well as having a Snow School, Snow Park for children, and hiking tours available around the snowy slopes. This resort also has a Kids Room where parents can safely leave their children to be cared for while parents zip around.
Hotel Niseko Alpen, Grand Hirafu: this simple hotel is only a short walk away from the main Hirafu ski lift, the perfect location for making the most of your skiing experience. Guests can choose from Japanese-style with tatami mats or Western-style rooms with beds, or a mixed style combining the best of both worlds.
DEAL: Prices start from RMB 400 per person per night including breakfast, access to hot springs and a perfect location for skiing.
AYA Niseko: newly opening in December 2016 is the AYA Niseko, a ski-in ski-out serviced apartment complex right at the bottom of the slopes. For those looking for a more independent holiday, this may be the perfect option. Guests are able to enjoy services such as the yoga room, natural onsen hot springs, art gallery, kid’s club and ski school as well as 24-hour reception.
DEAL: Rates start at around RMB 1,000 per person per night for a 47sqm Studio in January.
Hilton, Hokkaido: there are also many other resorts in the surrounding area. For those looking for a more luxurious stay, look at the Hilton branch in Hokkaido. Ski-in/ski-out access, a fitness centre, golf course, and hot air ballooning are only a couple of examples of the amazing amenities. Crowned Japan’s Best Ski Hotel by the World Ski Awards (2013, 2014 and 2015), there isn’t much that beats the location or view of the ‘sea of clouds’ blanketing Mount Yotei from the Hilton. Expect spectacular panoramic views of the slopes, and top quality hospitality.
DEAL: December rates start from ~ RMB 1,800 per room per night for 2 adults and 1 child in a King Deluxe Family Suite.

Club Med also provides a relaxing stay, offering horse-rides, hot springs and various activities for kids as off-slope pastimes.
DEAL: December is peak season, but discounts are available for February/March 2017.

Getting There
Flights go from BCIA to Sapporo’s New Chitose Airport. Resorts will run shuttle buses with around 2.5 hours travel time, and most packages will have the option to include airport transfers.

CAMBODIA

Why Cambodia? The majestic temples, phenomenal food and perfect climate to get away from the Beijing cold are only a few reasons to visit this beautiful country. November to February is the best time to go – the weather is relatively dry and the temperature is ideal for either lounging by the pool or wandering around the temples. Whilst it is therefore busy at this time of the year, there are still plenty of family deals for you to enjoy. Travel in the first week of December or late January to avoid peak airline fares and tourist crowds. Optimum weather continues in February so Chinese New Year is still a perfect time to travel! Here are a few options for a spacious but well-located base from which to explore Siem Reap.
Where to stay?
De Sarann Villa: for those looking for a unique family experience at great value and in one of the most beautiful cities, this boutique villa complex may be the perfect fit. Family suites and tailored tour guides are available on request.
DEAL: Rates start at RMB 2,000 per night for a Royal Family Suite Villa (with Private Pool), 3 persons, December 2016 to January 2017.

HanumanAlaya Villas: the Hanuman travel group has set up a beautiful, spacious and perfectly located holiday spot. The villas are only a short walk or tuk-tuk ride away from the major sights, yet set in a quiet and private environment. Whilst areas like the Old Market and other tourist spots may be heaving in peak season, nearby areas such as Wat Bo or along the river near the villas are more relaxing yet beautiful places to explore. The HanumanAlaya Villa complex also works with its sister company, Hanuman Tourism, to bring reliable guides and well-organized tours of Cambodia to its guests. Tickets and tours can be arranged through the resort this way, which saves parents the stress of finding all activities themselves whilst taking care of children. The space available in these villas is ideal for families, and the perfect oasis in the busy city for children to relax and enjoy their holiday.
DEAL: The Pool View Suite is recommended, fitted with 2 queen-size beds and a balcony. Rates for a Deluxe Suite Room start at RMB 1,580 for December 2016 to January 2017.
Getting There
As there are no direct flights to Siem Reap from Beijing, plan at least a day for travel, maybe two, depending on your family’s constitution and organizational ability. Stopover options include Kunming, Seoul, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou. If you can’t make a day of the layover, we suggest Hong Kong International for its views, Hongqiao in Shanghai for the children’s rest area, and Seoul Incheon for the many free perks, from shower areas, massage chairs, transit tours, to rest lounges.

SANYA
The closest tropical resort to Beijing, Sanya is located on the southern Chinese island of Hainan. With beautiful beaches and an abundance of water-sports and resorts to enjoy, Sanya is very well known as an ideal holiday getaway from the mainland. Yalong Bay in particular is popular due to the large concentration of luxury hotels – almost all international 5-star brands will have a branch there. However, this does mean the beach can get crowded in places – it is recommended to find somewhere with a private pool as another option, or a spacious villa complex in which a family can have more privacy instead of having to mix with tourist crowds. Some families also rent apartments nearby other beaches, perfect for social family gatherings.
Where to stay?
The Mandarin Oriental, the international luxury 5-star brand, combines “contemporary design with laid-back beach chic” in Sanya. This hotel consciously caters for families. Their services include the CoCo Kids Club and they provide any complimentary amenities you may need such as baby cots, highchairs, bottles and sterilisers, as well as kids’ bathroom items including bathrobes and slippers, available on request. There is a range of rooms, suites and villas with sea views or private pools to choose from, as well as extensive dining and spa facilities.
DEAL: Rates start from RMB 1,550, with complimentary round-trip transfers for villa guests.

A luxurious gem on the Yalong Bay PGA International Golf Course, the Grand Metropark Resort Sanya is a spacious villa complex ideal for families and large groups. They have spacious villas and activities for all ages, from a playground and kids club for the younger ones to (non-motorized) water-sports, hot tub and a private beach for teenagers and adults to enjoy.
December rates start from RMB 800 for a Deluxe Room per night for 2 adults, and approximately RMB 2,500 for a Deluxe 2-Villa Bedroom per night including tax and service fees (4 adults).

Getting There
Deals on the four hour flights from Beijing to Sanya dip to a low RMB 540 (one way), but cost per person is typically in the RMB 2,000 – 4,000 ranges. Train sleepers range from RMB 850 – 2,900, but the trip isn’t for the faint of heart or the easily bored child, as the wheels keep turning for an astonishing 39 hours.

Food, community, and culture are intrinsically linked, and this is seen clearly with Dini Freudlich’s family, where the love of food and family spills over into her kosher restaurant in Beijing. Dini Freudlich has five children: Mushka (20), Devora (19), Chava (13), Aaron (10), Grunia (9), Eleh (4, “and as he liked to remind me, almost 5!”). Her and her husband Rabbi Shimon Freundlich work with a company called Chabad that promotes Jewish welfare and sponsors international outreach programs. All of the children attend Ganeinu International School, which Dini helped set up. However, because it is hard not to disrupt the children’s schooling by moving around, the two elder schoolchildren (Chava and Aaron) are partly homeschooled. They have a home program in the afternoon, which is a Jewish online course that is taken by about 1,000 international students worldwide.
The little chefs were Dini’s youngest two children and three friends, who giggled as they helped each other set up. They shyly explain the symbolism of the food Dini has beautifully set up for the Jewish New Year on a table. The October holiday is an important one for Jews as the October 2 2016 marks the start of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. The sample includes food such as apples and honey “for a sweet year,” round-shaped chalah bread to indicate the full circle of the new year, and a fish head (“ew!”) to symbolize being ahead of things instead of behind them. Sweet food is clearly a theme with sweet rice, pomegranates (full of seeds, symbolizing many good things to come), and carrots cooked in sugar.

Kosher food is hard to find in Beijing, so Dini’s restaurant is a social space as well. This helps to create a home away from home for the Jewish communities abroad. Most of the ingredients can be found in local stores such as April Gourmet, Jenny’s, BHG, and so on. Specific kosher foods may have to be imported from the US or Israel, and there is a small shop next to the main restaurant to stock these and provide for those following a kosher diet.

Honeycakes 蜂蜜蛋糕 (1 portion)
2 tablespoons honey 两勺蜂蜜
2 tablespoons butter 两勺黄油
1 egg 一个鸡蛋
1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence 半茶勺香草精
3 tablespoons brown sugar 三勺红糖
4 tablespoons flour 四勺面粉
1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/4茶勺泡打粉

Method:
1. Add honey and butter to mason jar, microwave for 30 seconds to melt.
在玻璃瓶里加入蜂蜜和黄油。在微波炉里加热30秒，让材料融化。

2. Add the remaining ingredients in the order of the ingredients list above. If Kosher, be careful to crack the eggs in a separate bowl to check for bloodspots before adding to the mixture.
照以上所列的调料顺序，把剩下的香料依次放入。如果要合犹太人戒律，应该先把鸡蛋打在碗里，查有么有血斑。
3. Mix well. Microwave for 3 – 5 minutes (depending on your microwave) until they have risen.
混合均匀。在微波炉里烹制3到 5分钟，让蛋糕膨胀起来。

4. Be careful of hot jars! Eat straightaway or screw lid on and tie with a ribbon to give as the perfect New Years gift.
玻璃瓶很热，小心烫手！即刻享用，或盖上盖子，系上丝带，一件赏心悦目的礼物新鲜出炉了！

With an extensive background in fashion and commercial studio photography, as well as working with children both at home and in the studio, Dave brings his creative and personal style to Hegezhuang Village (between Shunyi and Chaoyang Districts). His current studio specializes in three main areas: kids and family photos, (whether fashion or home shoots); annual school portraits for international schools; and business or corporate headshots. Staying true to the family theme, he works with his wife in the studio and has two children in school, one at Harrow International School Beijing.
Hanssen was convinced by two friends working in Beijing to move to China in 2008 and hasn’t looked back since. He started work in a commercial fashion studio but, in 2010, with the beginning of a growing family, Hanssen felt like he was spending too much time at work and not at home. Now was the time to breakaway and start his own business, one that allowed him to spend as much time with his family and the international community whilst doing what he loved best. Nevertheless, freelance photography is never easy. “Every day is a hustle,” he explains. “I might be booked up for a month, but after that I’ve got to find more work. But it goes both ways. The more I work today, the more work I will get in the future.”
Inspiration comes from everywhere and everything he does. Hanssen is constantly on the lookout for new ways to approach shoots, new settings, and ways to bring out the best of each family. Whether he is driving his kids to school, commuting around Beijing, or just talking to people, he is constantly asking: could I shoot here? How would this work?
Hanssen takes well-deserved pride in the personal, relaxed service he offers to his clients. He not only does shoots in the studio, but as a freelancer he is flexible in going all around Beijing, thus able to personalize his photo shoots by creating the perfect environment for the client. Having worked with beijingkids before, we also know very well how easily he puts kids at ease. Hanssen knows all the tricks to making them smile for the shots and behave in front of the camera, which is certainly no easy feat. Parents can relax and not stress about making their children behave on the big photo day.
With increasing pollution and decreasing temperatures, it is important to have indoor play-spaces for young children so that they can run around in clean air. Located on the 3rd floor of the high-end Yintai centre in Beijing’s CBD, inKIDS with LINE FRIENDS is a new play-space designed for young kids and their parents to spend a day running around and having fun.

As the elevator approaches the 3rd floor, a huge flying teddy bear soars overhead, marking the entrance to the toy heaven.

LINE FRIENDS, a Korean brand with stores in Tokyo, Shanghai, Seoul and many other cities brings its endearing characters to Beijing. According to the official website, it has become a “global brand beloved in various fields of the world including 5,000 character products, animation, game, café, hotel and theme park.”

Loved by young children and adults both, the adorable teddies, ducks and frogs that were initially envisioned as mobile stickers watch over the ball pits and pens where children play. Areas like the Edward Waterfall (featuring large swinging balls that hang from the ceiling) and Sally Lake (a sea of clear plastic balls perfect for diving into), bring character to the fun space. There is also a white netting that runs across the upper floor of the play area and is both a safe and exciting running space for the kids. Corners are padded and all surfaces are clean, making it possible for parents to let their children run free without worrying too much.

Most kids are accompanied by their parents around the play areas. Shoes are not allowed but socks are available at the entrance. There is a cafe and sitting area for parents to relax, chat and work while enjoying the view over the Beijing financial centre.

Kids under 10 would be most suitable age group for this area. With a muted color palette, soft colors and architectural shapes taking center stage, this account showcases both the details and broad cityscapes Beijing has to offer. Pictures are chosen by admin who pick from photos tagged with the account #vscobeijing.

@followbeijing

Similar to @vscobeijing, this account chooses favourite images from their followers from those that are tagged @followbeijing #followbeijing. Vibrant colors, strong landscapes and varied subjects of focus – from food to portraits to interiors – make up this Instagram.

No Beijing Instagram list can be complete without one dedicated to food. Local delicacies and Chinese cuisine classics take prominence, but not forgotten are some western restaurants such as Let’s Burger and The Rug. Birds-eye views as well as close-ups of the dishes bring out the different textures.

Dynamic lines and architectural patterns create a strong ‘gram. Whilst shots are mainly of the city and a mix of both imperial and contemporary buildings, natural landscapes are also featured. Email instabeijing@gmail.com for a chance to be featured.

With photography by a Member of the Chinese photographers’ Association, Zeng captures the people of Beijing perfectly. A day out under the sun by your nearest pool – or even just in your garden – requires hydrating refreshments to keep from getting hot and bothered. As China is famous for its fragrant teas, what better way to relax in Beijing than with a home-brewed iced tea in hand! From Iced Matcha Smoothies to Lemon & Honey Green Tea to the classic Milk Cha, here’s a list of recipes perfect for getting you through the sweltering heat.

I found experimenting with teabags that the bitter taste that normally comes if you leave the bag too long in boiling water doesn’t come through in cold brew tea – leaving the bags in water overnight in the fridge. apart from the matcha, pu’er and milk cha recipes, the teas here are made cold brew and should have to bitter aftertaste. For tea enthusiasts less lazy than I am, one tablespoon of looseleaf tea is approximately the same strength as one teabag (I normally use Twinings). However, different brands and the age of the tea will vary – you just have to experiment a little!

matcha smoothie (Serves 2)
Ingredients: 1 teaspoon matcha powder, 1/2 cup [coconut]milk, 1 frozen banana or 1/2 a diced mango, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence, 1/2 cup ice
Blend on high for 30 seconds – a minute. Add more ice or water if needed for preferred consistency.
* do not add the frozen fruit but use 1 cup milk of choice and 3/4 cup ice for matcha latte instead of smoothie.
* matcha powder is probably easier and cheaper to buy online than in stores, unless you bring it home from Japan! Taobao has the advantage of receiving your order within 2-5 days – many other online stores will take longer. However, be careful of matcha powder with added sugar or sweeteners: look for 100%matcha in ingredients.

lemon&honey (serves 4)
Ingredients: 1/2 lemon juice + zest, 1/4 cup honey, 3 loose/bag pure green tea, pinch cayenne pepper (optional)
Strain the teabags as well as pears and goji berries to serve if you don’t feel like eating your tea!

earl grey (serves 4)
Grate the orange or lemon zest and thinly slice. Add 1/2 cup sugar to a saucepan and 1 cup water. Heat and stir until all sugar is dissolved. Keep in small pouring jug and cool. Add 4 earl grey teabags to 5 cups water as well as the citrus fruit zest. Brew overnight in the fridge and serve with sliced citrus and sugar syrup to taste.

Reduce heat and simmer until the strength of the tea is to taste, around 15-20 minutes but can be for longer (add water or brown sugar if needed). Leave to cool, strain the teabags and store in fridge for up to 2 days.
